Now: When the fog isn't around, this stretch of shops and restaurants seems quaint and sunny. It's a sidewalk destination for residents of the adjacent hilly residential neighborhoods, but probably missed entirely by most visitors to San Francisco.
Then: The Muni Tunnel carrying trains from under Twin Peaks through West Portal opened in 1918.
How To Get There: The K, L, and M Muni lines all emerge from the tunnel at the mouth of West Portal Avenue. For driving, you can usually park on the residential streets around Vicente Street, curving up from West Portal just west of the Muni tunnel.
