Now: An area of grand estates, some with ocean and bay views unlike any other place in the city. For visitors, this part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area contains Lands End - a landscaped trail that follows San Francisco's northwest corner from the Sutro area around to China Beach, offering spectacular views and access to the shore.

Then: The Fort Miley military reservation operated gun batteries along the cliffs at Lands End, and the remains of these are still there at the rock outcroppings. Three shipwrecks from the 1920s and 1930s are visible from the trails and vista points.

How To Get There: Not really served by public transportation (except the 29-line, which skirts the area at 25th Avenue as it enters the Presidio), it's really just easier to drive here. Parking is typically easy in and around El Camino del Mar, in and around the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Lands End (except when very popular exhibitions are going on at the Palace of the Legion of Honor).
