Now: The first of two gateways to the Mission District via BART, the contrast with wherever you're coming from can strike you like a dirty explosion of color and diverse energy. 16th Street crosses the parallel lines of Valencia and Mission.

Then: The Roxie Theater has operated at this location since 1909. (It renamed Roxie and given the neon sign in 1933). The Victoria Theatre was built in 1908.

How To Get There: By far the fastest and easiest way to get to 16th and Mission is on BART, since there is a station here. The trip takes only a few minutes from Powell/Union Square, so it's pretty tragic that many visitors never manage to make this connection. The 22 Muni bus line also travels down 16th Street, from Church and Fillmore to the west, and Potrero Hill to the east.
