Now: This area just south of Market Street is anchored by the Metreon, Yerba Buena Gardens, SF MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), and the Moscone Conference Center. The modern style of the area (and SOMA in general) is a departure from most of the rest of San Francisco.
Then: The Zeum Carousel at Yerba Buena Gardens was constructed in 1906 and was installed at San Francisco's Playland at the Beach from 1913 to 1972. See related postcards.
How To Get There: Just cross over Market Street around 4th Street, and you're there. Yerba Buena Gardens is bordered by Mission Street on the north. Pretty much the only place to park is the garage at 5th and Mission, which can be entered on Mission Street. Go to the bottom level if it's open.
