Postcards from San Francisco : Ferry Plaza & Bay Bridge

Postcards: Ferry Plaza & Bay Bridge

Ferry Building and Clock Tower

Completed in 1898, the building and tower stood as the gateway for passengers travelling through and across the bay, prior to the existence of the Bay Bridge and common airport use. It withstood the 1906 earthquake, was obscured for a time by the Embarcadero freeway passing directly in front of it, and underwent a restoration following the demolition of the freeway overpass after the 1989 earthquake. The building re-opened in 2004 in its present format - both a ferry terminal, and home to restaurants, markets, and the city's largest Farmer's Market.
